Tier 5 and extended unemployment benefits: the media awakens, while Congress still sleeps

This was a great recap article for the week.  Great work as always by Michael Thornton - the Rochester Unemployment Examiner.  Check out his other articles here:  http://www.examiner.com/x-27052-Rochester-Unemployment-Examiner

Mr. Thornton has been on top of everything just as well as anyone can be.  The purpose of this blog has always been to get people to the best information on the Internet about the issue of unemployment.  If that's not through any of the blog postings of US Unemployed Blogsite, there are tickers above, links to the side, and a scrolling list of tweets to sort through at the bottom.

I want to be clear to my readers.  Despite what Nancy Pelosi might have said last week this blogger is not giving up on this fight.  Do a Google search on her poll numbers and that should answer the question of whether or not this woman will be the Speaker of the House after November.

The only thing I can say about her is at least she votes "Yay" on previous unemployment bills and on HR 4213.  The demeanor and her tone when addressing the 99ers last week was unacceptable.  Democrats would be wise to have her resign so that another more qualified democratic candidate can run in the 8th district of California.

Without further ado...   This is the must read recap of the week....

Tier 5 and extended unemployment benefits: the media awakens, while Congress still sleeps

Best wishes to everyone out there.  Have a great weekend.  Think of new ideas to get more media!

Florida Unemployment Rate 12.3% - 2.3 Million Jobless Floridians Depending On Tier 5 Unemployment Extensions

The United States Census Bureau and Google, Inc. report the population of Florida at 18,537,969.  Based on the data collected from the United States Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, this would put the number of jobless Floridians at 2,280,170 or 2.3 Million simplified.

Of course not all of these jobless have had benefits expire which means that not all are in the position like millions others yet of needing action from the federal government.  But the raw data number is nearly 2.5 Million (if not more) who are currently unemployed.  How confident are you that three million jobs can be created in the state of Florida before the current benefits expire?

Numerous economists have given testimony to Congress that it may take years for the job market to recover to pre-Great Recession numbers.  Based on that knowledge and based on the reality of the situation, I would say that jobless should have 100% confidence that number is correct.

The numbers are horrible.  The unemployment numbers are horrible throughout the country but these numbers in Florida are way too high for any member of Congress to politicize the issue.  Congress, these Floridians need your help.  They, like all jobless in America, not only deserve at least a fair job market to compete but they most importantly need their continuing flow of assistance from Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC).  This recession is not of their making.  They did not choose these conditions for being unemployed - but they did choose you to represent them.

Senator Bill Nelson, will you step up to the plate on this issue and work double duty for the great citizens of Florida?  We acknowledge the fact that Senator George LeMieux is not addressing the needs of the unemployed in Florida by grandstanding on the issue of unemployment extensions (of all things to grandstand against) but Senator the inaction and the fact that so many have fallen off of their safety net and are facing foreclosure, credit default, and other financial calamities is making it seem that you do not care either.  Despite your voting record for the extensions, there are three million Floridians who feel insecure about the situation to begin and inaction or slow action from government brings them no security.

Please pass legislation to extend the dates of availability of tiers through the end of the year and also extend the maximum benefit amount beyond the current maximum of 99 weeks for this state.  Do so quickly - this is truly an emergency and there are so many counting on you to do this quickly.  The fact that Americans were even subject to losing their unemployment benefits is a red flag to the unemployed that the government has failed them.

Each day this passes is a day that Senate Democrats lose the credibility that this issue is truly an emergency and deserves emergency funding.  There has to be a way to get legislation passed for these Americans with or without the support of Congressional Republicans.  Too many lives of honest Americans are at stake and think about the children of those honest Americans.  How do you expect us to ever believe that we can resolve the issues of future generations of Americans if we cannot adequately care for Americans today?

If you are in the State of Florida, there are several sources for you to gather and socialize with other unemployed Floridians who can share resources and pertinent information.  If you have stumbled upon this blog by search engine or are not aware of these resources, you may find these links useful:

Four Pillars Forum - Florida Unemployment Benefit Extension - 20 More Weeks

Unemployed-Friends.com Forum - Florida

If anyone knows of any other sources for these Floridians, please post the link in the comments.  There does not seem to be a Facebook Group specific to the needs of Florida.  If someone were to decide to create a group or blog or anything of that fashion this blog would certainly post that information so persons know.

The official page for the State of Florida to file an unemployment claim and to see relevant information for your state is:  http://www.floridajobs.org/unemployment

Here is a contact sheet for Floridians, or all jobless in America, to contact their elected officials in Washington, D.C.:  http://tier5.webs.com/senatecongressionalcontacts.htm

The need for a Tier 5 Unemployment Extension is real and the need for that extension is now.

New York Unemployment Rate 8.6%, 1.7 Million Jobless In NYS Are Depending On A Tier 5 Unemployment Extension

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the most recent records show New York is the third largest state in population after California and Texas, with an estimated population of 19,306,183.  According to current data released by the USDOL, BLS, taking the numbers at face value, that would equal 1,660,332 New Yorkers who are jobless.

Sure when you say that the unemployment rate is 8.6% that certainly sounds lower than other unemployment rates in double-digits.  But when you think of it in terms of population, that number is horrible.  At least, 1.7 Million lives are presently turned upside down in the State of New York.

The goal is to offer as many resources and one-stop shops to everyone.  The open broadcast of these numbers also help to make the case for the need for a Tier 5 Unemployment Extension.  The existing tiers which have federally funded UI assistance cut off at 8.5% should scare the heck out of a New Yorker.  Percentages are too easily manipulated.  The raw data of people is what should matter most to Congress.

Senators Schumer and Gillibrand, you need to institute a stronger safety net for these people, 8.5% is still 1.64 Million people.  New Yorkers are flirting with the reality of dropping down to Texas-level unemployment rates and that brings these persons only more distress in this poor job market.  No one should have their safety net cut from them or even threatened over .1% - not with this population.

Anyone out there know how the 'below 8.5%' number was calculated?

Surely Congress is not so delusional to think there's no need for a safety net just because the percentage goes down a tenth of a percent.  However, it seems that they are to many who are not insiders.  We need to send them a message that Tier 5 Unemployment needs to consider population and this can easily be done by having different cutoff percentages for each state as opposed to the "one size fits half" strategy that is current law.

My goal is for New Yorkers and all jobless Americans to have the best resources at their fingertips (and I plan to do this for each state).  Jobless Americans need good and reliable information as the current unemployment system remains out-dated and the only source that helps organize seems to be search engines.

The fact that a Facebook group can provide more instant information to the jobless speaks volumes about how out-dated the system is.  It just wasn't designed for needs of the 21st century and this is the result of neglect of government.

If you are in the State of New York and are unemployed, you may want to consider placing these links into your bookmarks.  These sources will keep you informed and if there is anyone out there that has more links for New York unemployment information - please post it in the comments.

Aside from the NYS DOL page, here are where New Yorkers seem to gathering to share information:

Four Pillars Forum - New York State Extends Unemployment Benefits By 13 Weeks

Unemployed-Friends Forum - New York

Facebook - New York State Department of Labor

And Twitter is keeping all states updated, you just have to search.
Twitter - Tweets With Links For Tier 5  (aka #Tier5)

With nearly two million unemployed in New York State alone, there is a need for organization so people can get information quickly.  If anyone knows of other sites that may offer up to the minute news for New Yorkers - please post it in comments.

The intent is to have all of the states mentioned with links to resources.

Unemployed: Seize This Day Unlike Any Other For Tier 5

The United States Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics has released the national unemployment number as 9.9%.  The break down of state by state numbers are scheduled to be released on May 21, 2010, at 10:00 AM EST.  (This would be another chart indicating which states have the highest unemployment).

If you do not have a Twitter account, take a few seconds to create one.  All day long #unemployment will be a trending topic.  ALL DAY LONG.  Millions will be reading the tweets about unemployment.  This is our opportunity to include our message advocating for a Tier 5 Unemployment Extension.

Tweet something like this for example:  #Unemployment - Tier 5 is needed with 9.9% Unemployment Rate. Ask Congress To Extend Benefits At http://bit.ly/cJxE3g #Tier5

(Placing the # sign in front of unemployment and also #Tier5 and then including a link to a petition or any other website that is currently advocating for a Tier 5 Unemployment Extension.)  Tier 5 Advocates can make Tier 5 Unemployment a trending topic.  Do not underestimate the ability of this type of publicity and the opportunity to get other Americans to participate in the cause and see the need for Tier 5 Unemployment Extensions.

Sooner or later after seeing #Tier5 as a trending topic on Twitter people are going to get curious.  We need our best carnival barkers for this but it might raise awareness.

Seize today like no other days.  This is an opportunity to be heard by the nation.  Unemployment will be up for discussion all day today and perhaps all throughout the weekend.
